InJoy Internet Dialer

Secure Dial-Up Networking

Overview

InJoy Dialer™ is an easy-to-use software tool that can easily meet a wide range of dialing needs, from home use to the most demanding commercial applications. A multitude of powerful features make it an indispensable tool for power users, manufactures of embedded devices, and enterprises with complicated dialup-based networking requirements.

The intuitive design appears logical to most users and the responsive text user interface is easily operated and low on resource consumption. InJoy Dialer™ is backed by solid documentation, and on-screen hints ease the configuration.

InJoy Internet Dialer

Originally a shareware product, InJoy Dialer™ was awarded "Five Cows" by Tucows, nominated as best Internet utility on all platforms, and it has stayed a top seller in its class for over 5 years straight.

For easy deployment, installation is via unzip and a simple install script. To uninstall the product, run the uninstall script and remove the InJoy Dialer™ directory from the hard disk. To upgrade, simply unzip the new version on top of the old one.

InJoy Dialer™ is fully compliant with the latest RFCs for Point-to-Point connectivity, Internet sharing and VPN security.

Simple Dialing

InJoy Dialer™ is not in any way an extension of the dialing utility offered by your operating system. It is a new, standalone dialer that uses TCP/IP for transport.

InJoy Dialer™ allows you to connect to the Internet automatically on launch or manually through a single click on an icon. The program will automatically work its way down your previously-defined list of numbers until it establishes a connection. If connecting is difficult, you can elect to have InJoy Dialer™ cycle through the list, or quit after making a set number of attempts on each number. If you lose your connection, InJoy Dialer™ will automatically reconnect, again working its way through the list of numbers you provide.

For home use, this straightforward dialing capability might be all that you need. If you need a little more, InJoy Dialer™ has an auto-learn capability to make creating your own scripts nearly painless. And if you are a professional with an office in your home, or a business user, InJoy Dialer™ really separates itself from the competition. It serves as a robust platform for a range of powerful and well-proven plugin features.

Enhancements

The clean interfaces and the modular design allows advanced features to be plugged in on demand. That helps in keeping the basic Dialer simple, reliable and secure.

The range of powerful connectivity features adds value to traditional dial-up and allows InJoy Dialer™ to be automated for on-demand dialing, plus robust, 24x7 unattended operation.

With authenticated dial-in support, InJoy Dialer™ can be configured as a WAN router, able to both dial out on demand, disconnect when idle, and accept incoming calls if it is not already online.

Complete support of the Call Back protocol, both when acting as a dial-in server and dial-out client, adds a new layer of security and helps save costs. Unattended remote installations can be brought online by a simple, no-cost phone call: instead of incurring charges by answering your call, InJoy Dialer™ can be configured to log into its local ISP and establish a VPN connection to your system.

Plugin components enable InJoy Dialer™ to offer transparent Internet sharing, next-generation firewall security, packet filtering, and IPSec VPN support. And an optional, extra-cost API Toolkit makes InJoy Dialer™ externally programmable.

The following sections give a brief summary of the enhancements possible. For more information, download InJoy Dialer and/or check out the extensive documentation.

What will InJoy Dialer™ do for me?

The initial idea and still the primary design goal of InJoy Dialer™ is a quality product that integrates all the required connectivity features into an intuitively designed framework. An indispensable utility that would take the frustration out of dial-up networking and instead make it an "injoy"able experience.

Even though your Operating System already offers an adequate PPP Internet dialer, the performance and the design of InJoy is more appealing. InJoy is built to survive through an up-to-date feature set, proven reliability, interfacability and affordability.

To keep it simple for the user, InJoy Dialer™ today offers a lot of productivity and convenience features. Much constructive user feedback has been incorporated, and yet the pricipal idea remains the same. After 7 years of successful commercial use you can safely rely on its abilities to connect you to the Internet.

For the home user with basic requirements, InJoy Dialer is the fast and stable low-resource tool that gets the job done. It's easy to operate and it connects faster, i.e. you use less time waiting for PPP negotiations to complete. When scripting is required, InJoy uses its auto-learn capability to record them.

The Terminal Mode window offers a natural and convenient way for the user to communicate with the modem and InJoy Dialer™ uses the same window to show the script execution and the dialing progress.

For unattented operation or poor line quality, a range of features can be used to tailor the connection profile enforced by InJoy. Dial on Demand, Re-dial, re-connect, disconnect actions, phone number lists to name a few.

Getting the most of dial-up connectivity calls for automation and usability features. InJoy offers automation via features such as Auto-Connect (connect to the ISP when InJoy is launched) and Auto-Start (start and stop applications at any event). Usability features include configurable confirmations and toggles that control the overall behaviour of InJoy.

For the professional users and businesses InJoy really seperates itself from the competition. It serves as a robust platform for a range of powerful and well proven plugin features, described briefly below.

Dial On Demand (DoD)

Dial-On-Demand is one of InJoy Dialer's prime features, widely used by individuals, large corporations and even remote unattended PCs.

DoD allows for automatic dialing when an application needs it; auto-disconnecting when the connection is idle and, auto-dialing again, at the next need/demand.

DoD is a two-way feature. The usual implementation will allow the dialer to connect to the ISP once a connection needs to be established, but InJoy Dialer™ doesn't stop there. If you need a remote InJoy Dialer™ installation to dial an ISP, then enable 'Peer Triggered Actions' and give InJoy Dialer™ a RING. InJoy Dialer™ will immediately connect to the ISP and your remote site has been brought online.

DoD is a feature that is triggered on network activity and unless you are confident that you are in full control of your network activity, then it's advisable to also invest in the firewall plugin. The firewall is specificallly designed to allow fine-tuning of DoD, through its packet filtering features.

InJoy Internet Dialer - Desktop Folder

Dial-In, Dial-Out, Call Back WAN Router

The InJoy Dialer™ Dialer is designed to offer a complete 2-way WAN routing solution, capable of providing self-service terminals, embedded devices, POS terminals, home-networks, branch-offices and mobile workers with transparent, reliable and secure connectivity.

Dial out on demand provides outgoing connections, while authenticated dial-in PPP connections are possible when InJoy Dialer™ isn't already online. A single modem and phone line can be utilized for both purposes and no manual intervention is required.

With support of the PPP call-back protocol, InJoy Dialer™ allows for example an employee or service technician to be called back. After successful initial successful PPP negotiation, both ends of the PPP connection simply hang up and the call direction is reversed — ensuring the identity of the remote caller and potentially saving costs.

Installation, deployment and configuration is kept simple and can be done within minutes.

Firewall Capability

Even though dial-up connections are at less risk than full time, leased high-speed connections, they are not less vulnerable when attacked. Being online just a few minutes is all it takes for the automated Internet scanners to find your PC and compromise whatever weaknesses that might exist.

The Firewall Plugin found at the Professional and SOHO level turns InJoy Dialer™ into a powerful and secure gateway product, capable of delivering the highest level of modern protection for your dial-up PC or network.

The Firewall Security Plugin can be used on a standalone PC or on the dial-up gateway for a private network. It's easy to configure, either through manually editing configuration files or through the graphical wizards available from the InJoy Firewall™ desktop folder.

InJoy Firewall - Security Level

With the exception of the Firewall GUI monitors, the Firewall Plugin of the InJoy Dialer™ is similar to that of the InJoy Firewall™ product. Read more about the Firewall Plugin at these locations:

Internet Sharing (NAT)

NAT is a standard for Internet sharing, widely supported by the major firewall vendors, such as Cisco, 3COM, IBM, etc.

Using NAT, InJoy Dialer™ can share your Internet connection among all the computers on your LAN, with no reconfiguration of network applications. Combined with Dial-on-Demand, InJoy Dialer™ is transparent to your LAN users.

You need buy no expensive gateway or routing equipment. The only requirement is that InJoy Dialer™ runs on a LAN that is capable of running the TCP/IP protocol. InJoy Dialer™ with NAT runs on a single computer, and that computer need not be dedicated to the task.

With InJoy Dialer™ and NAT, everyone can surf the net, get mail, read news, telnet and everything else, from any computer on the LAN, all at the same time! And, because NAT operates beneath the routing layer, so you can expect InJoy Dialer™ to out-perform application layer proxies.

NAT Internet Gateway capability will work for any InJoy-supported platform on your LAN, including Windows 9x/NT/2000/XP/2003, MAC, Linux, OS/2, eComStation, etc.

You can find more information on the NAT features at this location:

IPSec VPN Client

Support of IPSec turns InJoy Dialer™ into a powerful VPN Client, providing comprehensive VPN security and the highest level of standards-based data protection. It provides reliable and interoperable data exchange, ensuring confidentiality, integrity and authenticity of transmitted data.

Through the InJoy IPSec Plugin, it's possible to build secure channels to other vendors in the market or to other InJoy products.

The IPSec standard is interoperability across OS platforms and InJoy Dialer™ has proven interoperability with leading vendors, such as Cisco, Nortel, PGPnet, F-Secure, Linux Free/SWAN and many others.

The InJoy Dialer™ IPSec features can be configured either through text-based configuration files, or graphically, through the tunnel workshop or the simple VPN wizard:

IPSec VPN Wizard

With the exception of the Firewall GUI monitors, the IPSec Plugin of the InJoy Dialer™ is similar to that of the InJoy Firewall™ product. You can find more information about the IPSec VPN features at these locations:

Dialer API

In response to corporate demand, a powerful high-end Dialer API ("DIALAPI") has been released for the InJoy Dialer.

The InJoy Dialer™ API provides business applications and embedded systems with full control and monitoring of InJoy Dialer™ based dial-up connectivity. The API is complete with sample code and documentation, so now it is finally possible to build a fully functional Internet dialer in just half an hour.

The Dialer API can be called from any programming language and, as a finishing touch, called via a proprietary RPC interface over TCP/IP to ease application testing in geographically dispersed environments.
